14 Almshouses located in the historic spa town of Harrogate, North Yorkshire

Rogers’ Almshouses are situated in the heart of Harrogate on Belford Road.
The original Almshouses face into a picturesque front garden, catching the sun throughout most of the day and providing a pleasant setting for neighbours to sit and chat.

About Us

The 12 original almshouses, built in 1868, were a gift of George Rogers, the Bradford textile manufacturer and Harrogate philanthropist. The present day Trustees have built a further 2 almshouses and in 1992, the Almshouses were refurbished to present day standards. The almshouses are available to persons from Harrogate or Bradford who are over 60 years of age. The Clock Tower is decorated with a bust of Mr Rogers and his emblem of industry – the beehive.

The Charity is managed by Trustees including:

  • The Dean of Bradford Cathedral
  • Vicar of Christ Church, Harrogate
  • Vicar of St Peter’s Church, Harrogate
  • A Chartered Accountant
  • Two Chartered Surveyors
  • A Solicitor
  • A Pastoral Care worker
  • Full meetings of trustees are held at least three times per year and a smaller group of working trustees meets approx. every 6 weeks to deal with day to day issues and to carry forward the strategy of the trustees.

The trustees are supported by:

  • A firm of Chartered Accountants who manage budgets, make payments and prepare the annual accounts.
  • A property management company who organise property repairs, maintenance and annual statutory inspections
  • A part time administrator

The Almshouses

Living at Rogers’ Square

If you are interested in applying to be considered as a resident of Rogers’ Almshouses, under the rules of the charity we have to advertise in both the Harrogate and Bradford newspapers, (Harrogate Advertiser and Bradford Telegraph & Argus) when a vacancy is available to invite persons to view the available property and then apply to be considered as a resident. A shortlisting process takes place, with those shortlisted then invited to an interview with a panel of Trustees, following which a decision is made to offer residency to the most appropriate person.

Due to the nature of how applications have to be dealt with, we do not operate a waiting list which you might experience with a social housing provider or local authority. Our Administrator does however keep a list of people who have expressed an interest and makes contact when a property vacancy is going to be advertised. If you wish to be added to our list, please contact our Administrator.

Eligibility criteria applies; minimum requirements are applicants must be over 60 years of age and be resident within or have a clear local connection within the administrative area of Harrogate Borough Council or the administrative area of Bradford Metropolitan District Council.

Rogers’ Square Garden

In 2018 we celebrated 150 years since George Rogers set up the Charity in 1868. To mark this important anniversary, the front gardens were totally re-laid, grass removed and replaced with perennial and herbaceous plants designed to give colour and interest all year round and become a haven for butterfies and birds.

The gardens were shown to the visiting judges of the Harrogate in Bloom and Yorkshire in Bloom competitions in both 2018 & 2019. In 2018 The McArdle trophy was awarded by Harrogate in Bloom to the Almshouses for the best new garden. In 2019 the Trustees were delighted to receive an award from the Almshouse Association for the work in linking the garden with the community it serves.

Our garden in maintained year round by a team of professional gardeners.
